Dear Friends,
As my team is preparing for the launch of my first book, Molly Gets Her Wheels, I thought it might be a good time to introduce everyone to the dog that inspired the book.
Molly, a Jack Russell/Maltese mix was a pretty special dog right from the very start.
Our adventure with Molly started during a Memorial Day Camping trip back in 1994 .It was shortly after we set up camp that we discovered that our coffee pot wasnât working. The thought of going a whole weekend without coffee didnât set well for the coffee lovers in the family, so we headed out to the nearest shopping center to look for a new one.
After reaching the shopping center, we decided to stroll through the different shops that were there. Our son, Keith, had been pleading for us to get a dog for a long time, so it wasnât surprising that when we reached a pet store, he wanted to go in. I am an animal lover but I wasnât ready to take care of a dog, so my answers to my sonâs pleas were always, âNo.â When we walked into the store, I looked around and was relieved to only find cages and tanks full of birds, lizards, fish, hamsters and an assortment of other   âpocketâ type pets. No puppies anywhere, whew! I was safe, or so I thought!
As we walked towards the rear of the store, I heard a noise that sounded like a dog barking. As we turned a corner, sitting there all alone was one very cute, tiny, white puppy who was wagging her tail a mile a minute when she got a peek at us. Even I couldn’t help but want to pick her up!
As they let her out to play, the storekeeper told us just how special this dog had become to everyone working at the store and that she had become a very good âescape artist.â In fact, just that morning while they were cleaning out her cage, she slipped out the front door and was later found going in and out of stores along the sidewalk. She was making a name for herself and was becoming âeveryone’s dogâ in the shopping center. Sadly, even with everyone falling in love with her, she still hadn’t found a family to call her own.
With that bit of information, my own family started to plead their case on why we needed to take this cute little dog home. Molly instinctively knew that if she was to win her way into our home that she had to get to me. I will never forget sitting on the floor next to her cage, my purse by my side. As I was explaining why it wasnât time to have a dog, Molly sat across from me wagging her tail with her puppy dog eyes. Her spirit was speaking to me, âPlease take me home; I will be the best dog you’ve ever had.â Her pleading eyes worked and I finally said YES! At that very moment, Molly leaped out of Keithâs arms and into mine, gave me several kisses on the face, jumped down, grabbed my purse with her mouth and off she went, dragging my purse all the way up to the cashier! She knew she had found a family to love and wasn’t going to give me a chance to back down! As you can imagine, all the store clerks chuckled and cheered. Their favorite dog was getting a forever family to love!
We walked out of the store with our arms full of dog paraphernalia such as food, a cage, toys, a dog bed and a happy dog jumping for joy all the way to our car!
That folks, is how our adventures with Molly began! I hope you will join us back here for more stories about our beloved Molly, the many animals that have joined our family since, as well as the journey (see my post “Mother’s Guiding Hand“) we’ve taken to produce the book âMolly Gets Her Wheels.â
PS In case you are wondering, we did remember to pick up the new coffee pot! HA!
